Kapolei's Economic Future

Following opening remarks by WOEDA's president, Mr. Roy Yonaoshi and Mayor Mufi Hannemann, Mr. Dave Rae, Senior Vice President, Kapolei Property Development, gave an update on various projects planned for the Kapolei area. As the meeting progressed, an eye-opening highlight was the briefing on the regional shopping mall which will have big box retailers including Hawaii's first Target store, a neighborhood shopping center and other retailers planned for the 50-acre "Kapolei Commons" shopping mall and the Kapolei Village center, a 4-acre community shopping center.
Chief Justice Ronald Moon shared information about the new judiciary complex that will host the Family Court, Wai'anae District Court, and a juvenile detention center. The welcomed expansion will offer great relief to the overburdened downtown
Honolulu district court building.
Educational administrators Dr. Daniel White, Randy Moore, and Dr Gene Awakuni provided an overview about some of the most advanced schools on Oahu planned for the Kapolei area, including Mr. White's Island Pacific Academy, state-of-the-art DOE schools managed by Mr. Moore, and the UH West Oahu campus, detailed by Mr. Awakuni, UH West Oahu Chancellor.
Senator Hanabusa provided an update on the latest plans for
West Oahu 's breathtaking playground by the sea.
Mr. Djuan Rivers, Vice President of Disney Vacation Club Resort
Hawaii shared his company's exciting plans for the Disney Vacation Club planned to break ground soon. Mr. Rivers, who has helped open nine resorts in such exotic locations as
Florida and
Paris , gave an overview of the 800-unit hotel and villa complex that will be dedicated to the company's time-share division, Disney Vacation Club. The resort, which will sit on 21 acres, have two 15-story towers with amenities such as a saltwater snorkel lagoon, a waterway featuring tubes and body slides through rockwork and an iconic caldera volcano, a wading pool, and spa. There will also be a kids club, wedding lawn, convention center and two restaurants.
2007 figures showed West O`ahu comprises 21% of O`ahu's total population - 15% of the state's total population - and is growing more than twice as fast as the population in O`ahu and entire state.
Other projects in our area include Kaupe`a, with 326 lots in the Villages of Kapolei; East Kapolei I, with 403 residential lots; and East Kapolei II, with 1,000 single-family residential units, 1,300 multi-family units and two school sites.
New homes, thriving businesses, new retail establishments and industrial parks, as well as new schools and social service facilities are why more and more people are finding out that Kapolei is truly the best place to live, work, play, and learn!
